COFLT Mini Grants

Take a Colleague to Lunch:  COFLT will award up to ten $50 mini-grants to promote collaboration and networking among language teachers.  The award allows the recipient to take a colleague or two to lunch or coffee or some other social event.  Special consideration will be given to applicants who engage colleagues new to the profession or who are not yet familiar with COFLT.  

Host an Event: COFLT will award one $500 mini-grant to host a larger event aimed at ten or more colleagues such as a film screening, hosting a speaker, a wine and cheese tasting, study session, cultural event, etc.  Special consideration will be given to applicants outside the Willamette Valley who are not able to attend regular COFLT conferences and workshop.

Objectives of the mini-grant program: 

1. provide incentive for teachers to develop new ideas and materials in their language
   

2. encourage professional growth and collaboration
   

3. facilitate the sharing of effective teaching techniques and materials among colleagues
4. develop an appreciation of foreign languages and cultures in the community

Recipient Obligation: 

As a condition of accepting the Host an Event award, you agree to submit a brief description of your proposed activity, including how it met the objectives of the mini-grant program, photo(s) of participants at the activity, a list of attendees, and a paragraph describing how the event went, to be published on the COFLT website, Facebook page, and PNCFL Lingo newsletter.  Send your description and photos to cofltawards@gmail.com within one month of the date of your get-together or event.

Recipients of the Take a Colleague to Lunch award are obligated to take a colleague to lunch, coffee, or some other social event.

Eligibility:

All COFLT members are eligible to apply.

Deadline: 

Due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, we are extending the original April 1 deadline to June 1.  Recipients will be notified of award status by July 1 instead of May 1.  $500 awards will be mailed upon receipt of a brief description of your completed activity, including how it met the objectives of the mini-grant program, photo(s) of participants at the activity, a list of attendees.  $50 awards will be mailed in conjunction with the award notification.  Only applications submitted via the Apply! link below will be considered.

Application:

Take a Colleague to Lunch: Using the "Apply!" link below, submit an abstract that describes the proposed activity and explains how the activity promotes the objectives of the mini-grant program. Maximum 500 words.

Host an Event: Using the "Apply!" link below, upload an abstract which should include: 1) description of the proposed activity and intended audience, 2) explanation of how the activity promotes the objectives of the grant program, and 3) plan for hosting the event and promoting it to your intended audience. Maximum 1500 words.

Mini-Grant Format Prior to March 2018 - suspended while COFLT pilots the new format described above.

COFLT awards two $500.00 grants each year to COFLT members in order to:

1. provide incentive for teachers to develop new ideas and materials in their language;
2. encourage professional growth;
3. facilitate the sharing of effective teaching techniques and materials among colleagues; and
4. aid in developing an appreciation of foreign languages and cultures in the community.

These grants are divided into two categories.

COFLT Professional Development Grant

As their name implies, Professional Development Grants provide funds for training and professional development.  The grant award may be used to pay fees for workshops, conferences (other than COFLT conferences, of course!), or other direct trainings.  The grant does not cover travel, lodging, food, or other incidental expenses.

COFLT Teacher Project Grant

Teach Project Grants fund implementation of specific projects that directly benefit the classroom or the community.  This might include purchase of materials or software necessary to implement the project, supply purchases, or production costs associated with project implementation.

After completion of the project, and within one year of notification of the award, recipients will be expected to submit a proposal for presentation at a COFLT conference or publish a 150+ word blog thread on the COFLT website.

All COFLT members are eligible to apply except: a) current members of the Board of Directors, b) members of the Mini-Grant Selection Committee, and c) anyone who has received a Mini-grant in any one of the three previous membership years.
